Quarry Ridge Rabbitry made an impressive showing in Boston this year, with Funck bunnies taking a whopping 5 of the 7 classes available to the Open Silver Fox rabbits! Funck's Ray of Light ended up taking home one of the big prizes, Best Opposite of Sex. When it came to the Fur class, Judge Hardin showed little hesitation over who he thought presented the best quality coat on the day--Funck's Somme took the honors this year, once again verifying that Quarry Ridge Silver Fox can grow a mean, competitive coat! Final tallies are forthcoming, but so far the immediate results are: Open Black Silver Fox Senior Buck: Funck's Ray of Light Senior Doe: Funck's Hiaku 6/8 Doe: Funck's Somme Junior Buck: Funck's Pixel Best Fur: Funck's Somme Best Opposite of Breed (Open Black): Funck's Ray of Light Best of the Best Opposites (Open & Youth, all varieties): Funck's Ray of Light Other placements of note go to Funck's Secret Agent Man (Ray's son) who scored 2nd to Ray in the Senior Buck class, Funck's Legacy & Protege who scored third and fourth respectively in the 6/8 Doe classes (both ladies blew their coats right before leaving the house--go figure!!!!!), and Funck's Arisa, a little 9 week old doe out of Funck's Midori who ended up 7th in a class of 20 Junior Does. Overall, it was a very successful Convention, by far the best showing that the barn has done thus far. ARBA Convention has never been much of a friend to Quarry Ridge since it is held in the Fall. It is very hard to prepare rabbits for a major showing in the middle of the autumn months if you live south of the Mason Dixon line. After a hard June of humidity and heat, the rabbits all "blow their coats", meaning they moult out their thick fur in favor of a thinner coat for the rest of the hot months. Later, this coat needs to be shed out as well in order to have a thick winter coat. This second moult usually takes place in late September when the weather shifts to cooler nights, but more often than not in our barn the rabbits don't start the process until later, like in OCTOBER. Convention is ALWAYS in late October, to give rabbit's the time to grow that new coat, but the timing is just so tricky for those of us in the south. This is why the barn usually does much better in the Spring National--no pesky summer coat to turn over. But this year, for the most part, the rabbits' coats were on point! Quarry Ridge is very grateful to the powers that be who hosted, prepared, governed, and judged this year's show. A total of six homegrowns went to new homes, including Funck's Secret Agent Man, the 2nd place Sr. Buck! We'd like to thank our buyers for trusting in the quality of our stock as they infuse our genetics into their own lines. Next stop: PASRBA Convention in February-- see you there! Funck's Somme
